A Tale of Two Eras in North Chatham
When viewed from one side, the weathered cedar-shingle siding and blue-painted shutters clearly indicate that this home is antique. Come around to another side and the look is altogether different.
With clients who have a unique vision for an altogether new look for the expansive landscaping surrounding their house, a fun play between old and new emerges, one that feels fresh yet still in keeping with the home’s historic pedigree.
Brick walkways in the front of the home, set in a herringbone pattern, are new yet were intentionally designed to complement the historic home, as were the traditional cedar lampposts and six-foot-tall privacy fencing.
Come around to one side of the home and the look is completely different. A large swimming pool is surrounded with a decidedly modern wood deck, which is interspersed with strips of traditional bluestone. A walkway of the same materials, laid out at the same level, leads to an adjacent dining area. Beyond the pool and dining deck, accessed by a three-step stairway on either end, is a regulation-size tennis court.
The overall look, from traditional materials used in disparate ways to old-school pink Cape Cod roses alongside sleek silver fescue, feels like a cheeky take on Old Cape Cod.
