A Hydrangea-Filled Haven in Chatham
Hydrangeas, the quintessential Cape Cod flower, play a dominant role in a lush landscape design laid out in a series of “rooms.”
From a deck so oversized it almost dwarfs the home to a rambling landscape that beckons one to spend time exploring each corner, everything about this home located outside of downtown Chatham is all about outdoor living.
To one side of the house is the swimming pool, positioned to create a sense of visual balance between it and a home addition on the opposite side. Here is one of the primary gathering spots. At one end of the pool is a slightly elevated terrace with a sitting area and a pergola overhead. An additional terrace alongside the pool has space for a quartet of chaise lounges.
Between the pool and the house is yet another terrace, this one arranged with an outdoor kitchen and a dining table and chairs. Additional seating groupings dot the expansive lawn, as do bluestone pathways with short stairways incorporated for visual interest and to transition between various levels.
Mature plantings, including dozens and dozens of hydrangeas, are everywhere: surrounding every terrace, along the entirety of the foundation and much of the perimeter of the yard, and in hedgerows used throughout to create a variety of intimate spaces. So numerous are the plantings, the home is barely visible from the street or to its neighbors, which is very much as our clients intended.
